The HHKB Professional Hybrid Type-S (Happy Hacking Keyboard) is perhaps the most iconic keyboard in the enthusiast world, designed by Professor Eiiti Wada and manufactured by PFU. Born from the philosophy that the ideal keyboard should not require your hands to move from the home row, the HHKB’s layout and switch technology represent decades of refinement in pursuit of typing perfection.
The keyboard uses Topre electrostatic capacitive switches, which operate on a fundamentally different mechanism than traditional mechanical switches. Instead of metal contacts, Topre switches use a spring-loaded rubber dome over a capacitive circuit, producing a typing feel that enthusiasts describe as uniquely smooth and satisfying — a gentle, progressive bump followed by a soft landing. The Type-S variant adds silencing rings to dramatically reduce both upstroke and downstroke noise.
The 60% layout follows the original Unix keyboard layout, with the Delete key placed where most keyboards have Backspace, and the Control key in the Caps Lock position — positions that programmer and Unix users find far more ergonomic. Function layers provide access to navigation and function keys through key combinations.
The Hybrid connectivity supports both Bluetooth 4.2 (up to four devices simultaneously) and USB-C wired connection. The keyboard runs on AA batteries for wireless use. Keycaps are made from PBT plastic with dye-sublimated legends, and the entire package exudes quality. The HHKB is not just a keyboard — it is a philosophy, and for its devotees, it remains unmatched.
